Description
This Khmer style Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in the Earth-Touching (Bhumisparsha Mudra) posture, representing the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called upon the earth to witness his triumph over illusion and temptation. The composition reflects the calm proportions and composed spiritual presence associated with the Khmer-influenced sculptural traditions of mainland Southeast Asia.
Distinctive elements — including the tiered royal crown, elongated ear ornaments, and subtle chest adornment — express the stylistic vocabulary of crowned Buddha imagery. In Southeast Asian Buddhist art, the crown symbolises the Buddha’s spiritual sovereignty, representing enlightenment as the highest form of kingship.
The figure rests upon a broad rounded lotus pedestal, creating a stable and grounded composition. The bronze surface displays a developed patina with areas of tonal variation and traces of devotional gold leaf, lending the piece a dignified and time-softened character.
