Luang Phor Koon – The Buddhist Legacy of Wat Ban Rai

Luang Phor Koon Parisuttho (A.D. 1923–2015), also known as Luang Por Khun, was one of the most respected Buddhist monks of modern Thailand. Closely associated with Wat Ban Rai in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, he became widely recognised for his Buddhist teachings, charitable contributions and enduring influence on Thai amulet traditions.

Born in Nakhon Ratchasima in northeastern Thailand, Luang Phor Koon entered the Buddhist monkhood in B.E. 2487 (A.D. 1944). Throughout his monastic life, he became known for his humble lifestyle, approachable personality and straightforward teachings. His dedication to Buddhist principles and community service earned him widespread respect among devotees from different backgrounds.

One of Luang Phor Koon’s most significant contributions was his extensive charitable work. Donations received through religious activities and public support were directed towards the development of schools, hospitals, temples and other community projects across Thailand. His commitment to generosity and public welfare became an important part of his legacy.

Amulets associated with Luang Phor Koon include traditional portrait medallions, Phra Somdej-style powder amulets, Phra Pidta designs and other commemorative pieces. These amulets were produced in different materials and artistic styles, often featuring his likeness, Thai inscriptions, temple names and decorative motifs. Their designs and production characteristics vary according to the individual edition and period.

Among the most recognised editions are the early portrait medal issued in B.E. 2512 (A.D. 1969) at Wat Jaeng Nok and the well-known Sang Barami edition of B.E. 2519 (A.D. 1976), associated with Wat Ban Rai. Numerous subsequent editions were produced over the years, contributing to the extensive variety of Luang Phor Koon amulets found within Thai collecting traditions.

Luang Phor Koon passed away in B.E. 2558 (A.D. 2015), leaving behind a lasting legacy of Buddhist devotion, generosity and community service. His life and teachings continue to hold an important place within Thailand’s religious and cultural heritage.

Today, Luang Phor Koon amulets remain highly regarded among devotees and collectors for their historical associations, religious significance and distinctive Thai craftsmanship.
