Description
This Lan Xang (Laos) style seated Buddha reflects the distinctive sculptural tradition of the Lao Buddhist world, historically centered around Luang Prabang and Vientiane. The composition departs from classical Thai court aesthetics, instead presenting a more stylized and expressive interpretation rooted in regional craftsmanship.
The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha Mudra (Calling the Earth to Witness) — a gesture symbolizing enlightenment and unwavering resolve. The figure’s compact posture and grounded presence convey stability and inner strength, characteristic of Lao-influenced devotional imagery.
Notable features include the tall, flame-like ushnisha, sharply defined facial structure, and pronounced beaded hair curls, all of which align with Lan Xang stylistic vocabulary. The facial expression carries a slightly more assertive and graphic quality compared to softer northern Thai (Lanna) examples, giving the piece a distinct visual identity.
The surface displays a naturally aged bronze tone, complemented by remnants of gold leaf application — a traditional act of devotion commonly seen in Buddhist practice. These traces add both texture and spiritual context to the sculpture.
With a height of 27 cm, this piece offers a balanced presence suitable for display, while maintaining the compact proportions typical of regional devotional casting.
