Phra Somdej – The King of Thai Amulets
Phra Somdej is one of the most revered and highly collected Buddhist amulets in Thailand. Often referred to as the King of Thai Amulets, the traditional Phra Somdej holds a distinguished position within the Benjapakee, the five most celebrated types of Thai Buddhist amulets.
The history of Phra Somdej is closely associated with Somdej Phra Buddhacharn Toh Phromarangsi (A.D. 1788–1872), commonly known as Somdej Toh or Ajarn Toh. He was one of the most respected Buddhist monks of the Rattanakosin period and served as the abbot of Wat Rakhang Kositaram in Bangkok. Renowned for his Buddhist teachings and spiritual practices, Somdej Toh is widely credited with establishing and popularising the traditional Phra Somdej amulet.
Traditional Phra Somdej amulets were commonly produced using sacred powders and other natural materials. Historical accounts describe ingredients such as shell lime, flower pollen, rice, banana, sacred ashes and natural binding oils. These materials were prepared and pressed into moulds, with the amulets traditionally undergoing Buddhist blessing and consecration ceremonies. The precise composition and preparation methods varied between different temples and production periods.
The most recognised Phra Somdej traditions are associated with Wat Rakhang, Wat Bang Khun Phrom and Wat Ket Chaiyo, all of which are traditionally linked to Somdej Toh. Among the five principal moulds traditionally recognised for Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang are Pim Yai, Pim Song Chedi, Pim Than Saem, Pim Ket Bua Tum and Pim Prok Pho.
Phra Somdej is traditionally associated with protection, good fortune, prosperity and personal well-being. Devotees believe that wearing or keeping a consecrated Phra Somdej amulet can serve as a source of spiritual encouragement and a reminder of Buddhist teachings.
Today, Phra Somdej remains an important part of Thai Buddhist heritage, valued by both worshippers and collectors for its religious significance, historical associations and distinctive craftsmanship.
