Phra Rahu – The Eclipse Figure of Thai Amulet Traditions
Phra Rahu (พระราหู) is a distinctive figure in Thai religious traditions and Southeast Asian mythology, recognised for his association with solar and lunar eclipses. Originating from ancient Indian cosmological beliefs, Rahu became an important subject in Hindu and Buddhist artistic traditions, eventually developing a prominent place within Thai folklore and amulet collecting.
According to Hindu mythology, Rahu was an asura who attempted to obtain the nectar of immortality during the legendary churning of the cosmic ocean. After drinking the nectar, he was discovered by the sun and moon deities. Vishnu subsequently severed his head, but because Rahu had already consumed the nectar, his head remained immortal. Traditional accounts describe Rahu pursuing and swallowing the sun and moon, providing a mythological explanation for eclipses.
Over time, Rahu imagery became incorporated into Thai religious art and Buddhist cosmological traditions. In traditional Thai representations, Phra Rahu is commonly depicted as a fierce face swallowing a circular disc representing the sun or moon. This distinctive imagery appears in temple decorations, religious sculptures and various traditional amulet designs.
One of the most recognised Phra Rahu amulet traditions is associated with Luang Phor Noi of Wat Si Sa Thong in Nakhon Pathom Province. His traditional Phra Rahu amulets are particularly known for their carved coconut-shell designs, including examples made from the distinctive one-eyed coconut shell, known in Thai as Kala Ta Diao. These carvings often feature Rahu holding or swallowing the moon, sometimes accompanied by traditional inscriptions.
Phra Rahu amulets have also been produced in various other materials, including bronze, brass, pressed powders and other traditional compositions. Different editions feature variations in facial expressions, decorative borders, inscriptions and the arrangement of the sun or moon imagery.
In Thai cultural traditions, Phra Rahu also holds a place within astrology and beliefs concerning the movement of celestial bodies. These associations have influenced the artistic interpretation of Rahu across different temples and regional amulet traditions.
Today, Phra Rahu amulets remain a distinctive part of Thai cultural heritage, valued by devotees and collectors for their mythological significance, recognisable imagery and traditional craftsmanship.
