Phra Pikanet – The Elephant-Headed Deity of Thai Amulet Traditions

Phra Pikanet (พระพิฆเนศ), also known as Ganesha or Phra Phikanesuan, is the Thai representation of the elephant-headed deity of Hindu tradition. Distinguished by his characteristic appearance, Phra Pikanet has an established place in Thai religious art and contemporary amulet collecting, reflecting the longstanding cultural connections between India and Southeast Asia.

In Hindu mythology, Ganesha is commonly described as the son of Shiva and Parvati. He is traditionally associated with wisdom, learning, the arts and auspicious beginnings, and is widely known as the Remover of Obstacles. Through centuries of cultural exchange, representations of Ganesha became incorporated into Thai artistic and ceremonial traditions alongside Buddhist imagery.

Phra Pikanet is usually depicted with an elephant’s head, a rounded abdomen and a broken tusk. His posture varies between seated, standing and dancing forms, and different representations may feature two, four or more arms. Traditional accessories include a crown, decorative jewellery and patterned garments, depending on the artistic style and individual design.

The objects shown in his hands carry distinctive symbolism. Common examples include an axe or goad, a noose, a lotus flower, a broken tusk and sweet offerings known as modaka. A small mouse or rat may appear beside the figure as his traditional vehicle. The arrangement and interpretation of these details differ across Hindu and Thai artistic traditions.

Images of Ganesha have a long history in Thailand, including stone sculptures associated with Lopburi and Khmer-influenced art. Over time, temples, artists and amulet makers developed a variety of Phra Pikanet designs, drawing from both traditional iconography and modern Thai craftsmanship.

Phra Pikanet amulets are produced in different materials, including cast metal, pressed powders, clay and other compositions. Individual editions may feature intricate reliefs, decorative frames or Thai inscriptions, with variations in size, casting details and surface finishes.

Today, Phra Pikanet amulets remain valued by devotees and collectors for their cultural significance, distinctive symbolism and traditional Thai craftsmanship.
