Phra Pidta – The Covered-Eye Figure of Thai Buddhist Amulets

Phra Pidta (พระปิดตา), commonly known as the Covered-Eye Buddha amulet, is one of the most distinctive and widely collected forms of traditional Thai Buddhist amulets. Recognised for its characteristic seated figure with both hands covering the eyes or face, Phra Pidta holds an important place within Thailand’s Buddhist heritage and traditional amulet craftsmanship.

The origins of Phra Pidta are closely connected to Buddhist teachings concerning meditation, mindfulness and restraint of the senses. In traditional Thai religious accounts, the figure is often associated with Phra Gavampati, an arahant from the time of the Buddha. Different interpretations of the figure have developed over time, reflecting the diversity of Buddhist traditions and local religious customs.

The characteristic gesture of covering the eyes symbolises turning away from worldly distractions and directing attention towards inner awareness. Some traditional Phra Pidta designs also depict additional hands covering the ears, mouth or other parts of the body. These representations are associated with the concept of closing the nine bodily openings, expressing restraint of the senses and withdrawal from external distractions.

Phra Pidta amulets have been produced by numerous respected Buddhist monks and temples throughout Thailand. Among the most recognised traditions are those associated with Luang Phor Kaew of Wat Khruea Wan in Chonburi, Luang Pu Iam of Wat Nang in Bangkok, and Luang Pu Toh of Wat Pradu Chimplee. Their respective amulet editions have become important references among Thai collectors.

Traditional Phra Pidta amulets were produced using various materials, including pressed powders, herbal mixtures, clay and cast-metal alloys. Certain editions feature powder compositions mixed with lacquer, while others display distinctive metal-casting techniques. Differences in materials, surface textures, mould details and inscriptions contribute to the wide variety of Phra Pidta amulets found within Thai collecting traditions.

Phra Pidta designs range from simple seated figures covering the eyes to more elaborate representations featuring multiple arms, decorative pedestals and traditional inscriptions. These variations reflect the different artistic styles and amulet-making traditions associated with individual monks, temples and production periods.

Today, Phra Pidta amulets remain highly regarded among Buddhist devotees and collectors for their religious symbolism, historical associations, distinctive imagery and traditional Thai craftsmanship.
