Phra Leela – The Walking Buddha of Thai Buddhist Art

Phra Leela (พระลีลา), commonly known as the Walking Buddha, is a distinctive representation of the Buddha in Thai Buddhist art. Unlike the more familiar seated or standing images, Phra Leela depicts the Buddha in graceful movement, reflecting the elegance and artistic traditions of Thailand.

The Walking Buddha became especially prominent during the Sukhothai period, when Thai sculptors developed a distinctive style known for balanced proportions, flowing robes and gentle movement. The image typically features a slender figure, a serene facial expression and a flame-shaped finial above the head. This graceful form remains one of the most recognisable achievements of Sukhothai Buddhist art.

Phra Leela is commonly depicted with one foot stepping forward or slightly raised, one hand lifted with the palm facing outward in the Abhaya Mudra, or gesture of reassurance, and the other arm resting naturally beside the body. The precise arrangement of the hands, feet and robes may vary between different artistic traditions and amulet moulds.

In Buddhist artistic interpretation, the walking posture reflects the Buddha’s journeys to share his teachings. Some traditional accounts also associate the image with his descent from Tavatimsa Heaven after teaching there. These interpretations highlight the significance of movement, compassion and the communication of Buddhist teachings.

Phra Leela designs have appeared in traditional votive tablets and amulets from different regions of Thailand. Kamphaeng Phet is particularly known for walking Buddha amulet forms, including Phra Leela Med Khanun, whose elongated outline resembles a jackfruit seed. Other temples have produced their own versions in fired clay, pressed powders, bronze and other metals, with variations in posture, decorative borders and mould details.

Today, Phra Leela amulets remain an important part of Thai Buddhist heritage, valued by devotees and collectors for their distinctive iconography, Sukhothai artistic influence and traditional craftsmanship.
