Luang Phor Thuad – The Revered Monk of Southern Thailand

Luang Phor Thuad, also known as Luang Pu Thuat or Somdej Chao Pha Kho, is one of the most widely recognised figures in southern Thai Buddhist tradition. His life is traditionally associated with the Ayutthaya period, particularly the Sathing Phra area of Songkhla Province. Much of his biography has been preserved through temple histories, local traditions and religious folklore.

One of the most famous legends surrounding Luang Phor Thuad describes a sea voyage during which his vessel encountered a severe storm and a shortage of drinking water. According to the traditional account, he transformed seawater into fresh water, giving rise to his well-known title, “Yiap Nam Thale Chuet,” referring to the legend of stepping upon seawater and making it drinkable. This story remains an important part of his cultural and religious legacy.

Luang Phor Thuad is traditionally associated with Wat Pha Kho in Songkhla and Wat Chang Hai in Pattani Province. Historical traditions also describe his dedication to Buddhist studies and religious teachings, although the precise chronology of his life remains uncertain.

The modern Luang Phor Thuad amulet tradition became especially prominent in B.E. 2497 (A.D. 1954), when Wat Chang Hai produced its celebrated first-generation herbal-powder amulets under Ajarn Tim Thammatharo. These early amulets became important reference pieces among Thai collectors and were followed by numerous metal medallions, cast representations and commemorative editions.

Luang Phor Thuad amulets commonly depict the elderly monk seated in meditation, often upon a decorative pedestal. Different editions feature variations in mould details, materials, inscriptions and artistic styles, reflecting the diverse amulet-making traditions associated with his image.

Today, Luang Phor Thuad amulets remain highly regarded among Buddhist devotees and collectors for their religious significance, historical associations and distinctive Thai craftsmanship.
