Ajarn Toh – A Revered Monk of the Rattanakosin Period

Ajarn Toh, formally known as Somdej Phra Buddhacharn Toh Phromarangsi (A.D. 1788–1872), was one of the most respected and widely known Buddhist monks of the Rattanakosin period in Thailand. He is especially revered for his contributions to Buddhist teachings, his association with Wat Rakhang Kositaram in Bangkok, and his enduring influence on Thai Buddhist culture and amulet traditions.

Ajarn Toh was ordained at a young age and pursued his religious studies with dedication. Historical accounts associate his early monastic education with Wat Mahathat in Bangkok, one of Thailand’s most important royal temples. He later became closely connected with Wat Rakhang, where he developed a strong reputation for his knowledge of Buddhist scriptures, preaching ability and spiritual discipline. He also served as a respected preceptor during his lifetime and was widely known among both the public and the royal court.

In Thai Buddhist history, Ajarn Toh is particularly remembered for his association with the Phra Somdej amulet tradition. He is widely credited with establishing and popularising the traditional Phra Somdej image, which typically depicts the Buddha seated in meditation upon a tiered pedestal within an arched frame. The most recognised traditions connected with him include Wat Rakhang, Wat Bang Khun Phrom and Wat Ket Chaiyo, all of which remain highly regarded among devotees and collectors.

Ajarn Toh is also closely associated with the Chinabanchorn Katha, a well-known Buddhist chant in Thai religious practice. Over time, this chant became widely linked with Buddhist ceremonies, devotional recitation and amulet blessing traditions. His influence helped strengthen the spiritual and cultural significance of Phra Somdej within Thai Buddhist heritage.

Today, Ajarn Toh remains one of the most important figures in Thai Buddhist history. He is remembered for his wisdom, teachings and lasting influence on religious art, Buddhist devotion and the tradition of Thai amulet collecting.
