Description

Luang Phor Sothorn, also known as Phra Phuttha Sothon, is one of Thailand’s most revered Buddha images. Enshrined at Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan in Chachoengsao Province, this image is deeply respected for its spiritual power and the miraculous legends surrounding its arrival.
According to legend, Luang Phor Sothorn was one of several Buddha statues found floating down the Bang Pakong River during the Ayutthaya period. Locals tried and failed to retrieve it until, after sincere prayers, it finally allowed itself to be brought ashore in Chachoengsao — a sign of divine will. The statue was then installed at Wat Hong, later renamed Wat Sothonwararam.
The image is in the Subduing Mara posture, symbolizing the Buddha’s triumph over negative forces. Though the original bronze statue is said to be enshrined inside the current one for protection, what devotees now see is a beautifully gilded plaster replica, around 1.65 meters tall and nearly 2 meters wide.
Luang Phor Sothorn is believed to bless worshippers with good health, protection, business success, and safe travels. People from across the country visit the temple daily to offer prayers, garlands, gold leaf, and boiled eggs—an offering linked to wish fulfillment. The temple’s annual festival, often held in March or April, includes vibrant boat processions and religious ceremonies.
Miniature statues and amulets bearing Luang Phor Sothorn’s image are widely worn across Thailand. These amulets are especially popular among those seeking safety, prosperity, and spiritual strength. They are made from sacred materials and consecrated through rituals, making them powerful tools of devotion.
Wat Sothonwararam today is a major pilgrimage site and tourist attraction, featuring a grand white Ubosot and peaceful temple grounds. Despite modern development, the spiritual heart of the temple remains unchanged—centered on the profound faith in Luang Phor Sothorn.
This sacred image continues to inspire millions, symbolizing hope, divine protection, and the enduring power of faith in Thai culture.
